) | | | Occupational Health Centre performs the following activities: • research and evaluation of the impact of working environment factors on health and functional capacity; • research and evaluation of the preventive effectiveness of the occupational health (care); develops and tests innovative interventions on occupational health (care) in practice; • carries out monitoring, research and evaluation of the activities of occupational health services; • carries out circulation of the information on psychosocial work environment factors, preventive effectiveness of the occupational health (care) and the activities of occupational health services; • is involved (participates) in training (preparation) of health professionals and improvement of their professional qualifications; capacitates provision of educational practices to high school students and other audiences, develops (qualification) training programs for professionals (specialists); • is involved (participates) in drafting legislation and programmes, provides comments and suggestions to the Ministry of Health in relation to draft legislation and (or) programmes drawn up by the other institutions, participates in drafting (development / preparation) and implementation of health programmes; • coordinates and provides methodological guidance to health care institutions activities on psychosocial work environment factors impact on health and functional capacity, tests and evaluates preventive effectiveness of the occupational health (care) in the areas of research and evaluation of the activities of professional health services; • submits proposals to the Ministry of Health as well as state and municipal institutions, non-governmental organizations for the cooperation in the (respective) field of activities; • within its competence, shall represent the position of Republic of Lithuania in the European Union expert committees and working groups; collabourates with the World Health Organization and the other international organizations and foreign institutions in the (respective) field of activities; • collects, analyses and organizes information (data) of good practices about the impact on health and working capacity of psychosocial work environment factors, research and evaluation of the preventive effectiveness of the occupational health (care) and activities of occupational health services; • prepares the annual activity reports and presents the performance results to the public health policymakers and implementing agencies as well as the public; • within its competence, provides consultation (advise) to the legal and natural persons. | | | History of OHC Occupational Health Centre, previously called Occupational Medicine Centre (OMC), was established at the Institute of Hygiene in 12th of October 1992. Since establishment along 15 years of activities OMC acted as a multidisciplinary team of scientists, experts and labouratory professionals focused on research, training, expertise and information on occupational health. In the year 1993 OMC initiated establishment of Central Commission of Occupational Medicine Expertise and the first international project for the strengthening of occupational health in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. In the year 1994 the National Registry of Occupational Diseases was established in OMC and publishing of scientific monographs series called “Occupational Medicine” started In the year 1995 OMC labouratories became first state labouratories in Lithuania certified for chemical and physical hazards investigation for the occupational risk assessment at workplaces and are taking part in the inter-labouratory quality assurance programmes with the research labouratories in Germany, Poland, Norway, Belgium and Netherlands. In the year 1996 OMC participated in the preparation of the National Occupational Health and Safety Programme for the years 1996-2000 as well as of the basic national legislation for workplace risk assessment and notification of occupational diseases in Lithuania. This year postgraduate training course for Lithuanian OH&S professionals was started to be organized. In the year 1997 OMC joined the Baltic Sea Network cooperation, opened its own website and hosted the first WHO/EURO seminar for OH&S in Lithuania. This year OMC in collabouration with Uppsala University organized a postgraduate training course on “Planning and reporting research in occupational and environmental health”. In the year 1998 OMC participated in EU Inco-Copernicus project “Comparative analysis of OH&S system and practices in seven European countries”. In the year 1999 OMC participated in the preparation of Law on Occupational Heath Care and organized the first NIVA courses in Lithuania “Quality assurance and risk assessment”. This year first OMC doctoral dissertation “The functional state of the cardiovascular system depending on psychosocial stressors at work” was successfully defended. In the year 2000 OMC started to participate in PHARE “Twinning” project for the strengthening the enforcement of Lithuanian OH&S policy implementation and take active participation in the process of the harmonization of Lithuanian OH&S legislation with EU directives. In the year 2001 OMC successfully finished an international project on “Health assessment of the medical staff handling disinfection chemicals in the operating theatres of hospitals in Lithuania”. In the year 2002 OMC participated in the preparation of the National Occupational Health and Safety Programme for the years 2002-2004 and have successfully finished a participation in the National research programme for the evaluation of impact of orimulsion products on workers health. In the year 2003 OMC participated in EU project “Employment, working conditions and SME: what is the corporate social responsibility” and organized the postgraduate training course on research planning in occupational health for OH&S professionals of Lithuania. In the year 2004 OMC successfully finished a research project on studying the relationship between psychosocial work stressors and depression of workers of different occupations. In the year 2005 OMC participated in the EU projects on “The development of occupational health and safety training programmes in Lithuania“ and “Improving trade union health and safety capacities in the construction, forestry and woodworking sectors in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland“. In the year 2006 OMC successfully finished a research project on retrospective assessment of occupational asbestos exposure among respiratory cancer patients in Lithuania and participated in the EU Leonardo da Vinci project on "The development of professional education Standard, quality criteria and training tools package on safe work with asbestos". In the year 2007 OMC successfully finished the EU Leonardo da Vinci project on "The development of professional education Standard, quality criteria and training tools package on safe work with asbestos" and continued cooperation within the Northern Dimension Partnership for Public Health and Social Wellbeing (NDHS). | | |
