| | | | Area and population | Lithuania has been an independent republic since 16 February 1918 to 14 June 1940. Lithuania regained its independence on 11 March 1991. The population of Lithuania is 3.69 million and the area 65,300 km2 (population density 56.5 per km2). 68.1% of the population live in urban areas. The capital city is Vilnius (576,400 habitants), and the official language is Lithuanian. The population is composed of Lithuanians (81.6%), Russians (8.2%), Poles (6.9%) and other (3.3%).
